A simple fact you must face in clubs and casinos is that the higher the stake of the game, the higher the level of competition. In a higher stakes game, the tourists and local players tend to be better (though there seems to be poor players at most levels of play), and most definitely, the pros are better. Pros that squeeze out their living at $5-$ 10 will get picked clean at $15-$30, while $15-$30 players will get chewed up and spit out at $30-$60.

If a pro could earn money at a higher level game, he certainly would. He's playing to make as much money as possible and there's more money to be had with bigger stakes. You can measure a pro's skills by the betting level of game he plays.

As a poker player, no matter how small or large your bankroll, you must be aware of your skill level compared to the level of game being played. For example, if you're a fairly decent player, you may be able to compete with the tourists and local pros at the $5-$10 game. At the $15-$30 game, however, the competition may eat you for breakfast. Your risk factor at higher stakes tables increases for far more than the obvious money management reasons—it increases because you're facing better players.

Playing poker in clubs or casinos is different than playing in your regular Friday night game. The players and level of play tend to be more competitive, and there is usually a stricter bet and rule structure. While many players are there for fun, at the same time, there is a greater emphasis on winning.

In addition to tourists and local players, you'll often find local professionals grinding out a living at games of $5-$ 10 and higher. As opposed to your buddies back home in the Friday night game, players at these games are a lot less concerned about how your week went and a lot more interested in whatever green you're flashing that they hope to move into their own stack. The play of low-level pros at $5-$ 10 may not be spectacular, but it will be steady, and the overall competition will be better than you may be used to. As you move up the money tree, as we discussed earlier, you'll be running with bigger wolves.

Playing against local pros at smaller stake games doesn't mean you can't win money. First of all, if you're a decent player yourself, you may be equal to or better than the local pros. Second, there are always suckers at every game, patsies who never seem to learn a thing and are consistent losers contributing to everybody's pots.

I've emphasized lower stakes games thus far for a reason; the level of money being wagered in a poker game has everything to do with the level of competition you'll be playing against, and thus your chances of winning. The larger the stakes, the better the players. Pros playing in the $5-$ 10 game compete there because they're not good enough, gutsy enough, or well-financed enough to play at say, the $15-$30 game. The same applies for the $15-$30 and higher games. If the players could afford to profitably play for bigger stakes, they would move up to the bigger fish pond.

In casino and club poker, you're not playing against the casino. You're playing against other players, and that's where the money your wager has everything to do with your chances of winning. Let's look at this more closely.

Many poker games, particularly home affairs and low-limit casino and club games, tend to be more friendly than competitive. Players stay in more pots and play deeper into the hands. In situations like these, where players want to see more cards before folding and the play is loose, it is difficult to bluff opponents out in the early part of the deal. Often, your attempts at bluffing will be fruitless, and it would be better to play a straight game.

Further into the deal, however, the "sociable" players will begin to bow out as they realize that their longshots are no longer worth pursuing, especially when the larger bets start hitting the pot.

Watch for players who are losing heavily or have lost heavily and regained some of their losses. Psychologically, you have them in a position where they are more easily intimidated by your betting than normal. Players on a downward roll tend to play scared.

They are more easily bluffed when they don't have the goods. The more players worry over their winnings or losses, the more leverage you have to push them around with aggressive betting. Players who play timidly are also easily bluffed and bullied out of pots you can collect for yourself. They make for great targets.

Pick your spots carefully. Bluffing is a matter of timing and circumstance. When done judiciously, bluffing will make you a stronger player and a bigger winner. Bluffing too frequently can get expensive. As opponents tend to believe you less and call you more, your inferior hands will be taking extra betting losses. That's not good for the bankroll.
